I don’t have time to hang my clothes outside.
BY LILLIAN KAFKA
Here’s why.
- I’ve waited too long to wash them, and I need to wear that outfit tonight.
- The dryer is right here, next to the washer!
- Wet clothes are too heavy to carry outside.
- Electric clothes dryers were made for my convenience.
The reasons I hang my clothes to dry are far more simple.
- I’m only taking what I need.
- It’s a practice I use to stay present.
- My hands and mind could use a few minutes of careful, grounding fabric manipulation, to smooth wrinkles in the pants, wrinkles in the psyche.
- Clothing lasts years longer when you avoid the heat of an electric dryer. Stretch knits, blends and items with elastic will see a doubled, or tripled life by hang-drying.
- That’s one less bucket of coal that burned to satisfy my entitlement (and, by gosh, a lower electric bill).
