I don’t have time to hang my clothes outside.

BY LILLIAN KAFKA

Here’s why.

  1. I’ve waited too long to wash them, and I need to wear that outfit tonight.
  2. The dryer is right here, next to the washer!
  3. Wet clothes are too heavy to carry outside.
  4. Electric clothes dryers were made for my convenience.

The reasons I hang my clothes to dry are far more simple.

  1. I’m only taking what I need.
  2. It’s a practice I use to stay present.
  3. My hands and mind could use a few minutes of careful, grounding fabric manipulation, to smooth wrinkles in the pants, wrinkles in the psyche.
  4. Clothing lasts years longer when you avoid the heat of an electric dryer. Stretch knits, blends and items with elastic will see a doubled, or tripled life by hang-drying.
  5. That’s one less bucket of coal that burned to satisfy my entitlement (and, by gosh, a lower electric bill).
